Purpose: Achieve Peer Navigators help disabled students to navigate the campus and college system.
Peer Navigators support Achieve, which is a certificate program at Highline College for students with intellectual disabilities that includes credit and non-credit classes, intensive advising, involvement in campus life, participation in community-based internships, and assistance with job placement. As a program, we believe in the inherent potential of all people.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support disabled students with navigation of campus resources such as the Academic Success Center, Center for Leadership and Service, D-Center, etc.
- Support social groups open to all students and encourage students to engage with each other through social activities.
- Support study groups open to all students with the idea that if multiple students are studying together, they are more likely to remain focused.
- Peer Navigators are not tutors.
- Support student engagement in clubs and campus events. Peer Navigators may also support students with planning and organizing campus events or clubs, including supporting students to attend or lead events at the D-Center.
- Support a limited number of classes to help students engage in inclusive learning environments.
- Support Achieve classes to build rapport with students, particularly supporting “campus time” where students are required to engage with activities and resources around campus.
- Follow a weekly schedule for campus and student support.
- Attend all required trainings, including weekly Peer Navigator staff meetings
- Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits at Highline College and maintain a 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA
- Participate in at least one campus activity or club
- Demonstrate knowledge of campus resources and skills in leadership, organization, and listening
- Demonstrate cultural competency, a sensitivity to differences, and a personal commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion at Highline College
- Demonstrate strong personal integrity and a commitment to high ethical and professional standards
- Able to take direction, follow through on assignments, work independently, and be held accountable for task completion
- Have experience with MS Office, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, Canvas
- Pass a Washington State background check
