Public Speaking Center Tutor Job Description
Pay Rate: $18.15 per hour

About the Tutoring Center
The Highline College Tutoring Center provides academic support to all enrolled students by collaborating with faculty and student success offices. We are seeking motivated students with strong subject knowledge and excellent communication skills to serve as peer tutors.
Our mission is to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment where students can thrive. Tutors receive ongoing training to develop skills that promote student independence, active learning, and motivation. Additionally, we offer professional development opportunities, including CRLA national tutor certification for those who complete the program.
Public Speaking Center Tutor Role
Public Speaking Center tutors provide individualized and group support to students preparing for academic and professional presentations. This includes assisting with:
- Managing speaking anxiety
- Creating and organizing outlines
- Conducting research and citing sources
- Designing effective visual aids
- Developing delivery and presentation skills
Tutors work with students across disciplines, including Communication courses and non-Communication courses (e.g., English, Hospitality, Science, and Math). Additionally, tutors contribute to classroom instruction, lead workshops, and support campus events. This role offers valuable hands-on experience, enhancing your communication and leadership abilities, which are essential skills in any career path.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 3.5 GPA in the subject or discipline you intend to tutor.
- Completion of CMST& 220 (Public Speaking) preferred; CMST& 101 may be sufficient with demonstrated strong public speaking skills.
- Documentation of academic performance, such as a transcript or a letter of recommendation from a Highline instructor in the subject.
- Ability to attend a tutor training session.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Effective communication with multicultural populations to facilitate equitable learning experiences.
- Commitment to maintaining high ethical standards when working with students, staff, and faculty.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks responsibly and reliably.
- Collaborative mindset, with a willingness to work as part of a diverse team.
